Client: Dubai Mall Joint Venture (Dutco Balfour Beatty)
Structural Engineer: MEC
Project Description: With a gross floor area of more than 500,000 square metres The Dubai Mall is the world’s largest shopping centre. Construction of the Mall was commenced in 2004 and completed in 2008. In 2006 the Joint Venture became aware of deficiencies associated with the installation of the post tensioning to the floor slabs affecting more than half the floor area.
MEC’s role: In 2006 John Macartney was engaged by the Joint Venture to provide expert advice on the extent and significance of these deficiencies, to recommend procedures for their resolution and to oversee the implementation of the procedures. We were assisted with expert advice from Professor Ian Gilbert of UNSW. Our work was successfully completed in late 2007.
